  • Type of Mic for Nepal Documentary

In less than two weeks time, I am headed to Nepal to shoot my documentary ‘Journey to Kathmandu’. I am going to be in many situations where having a boom operator is not going to be possible (ie shooting in the Himalayas). What this means is that I will often be relying on my microphone that is mounted to my camera, a SONY HVR-V1U. I have been test shooting with this, as of late, and am realizing that a straight-up shotgun (ie directional) microphone may not be the best option. I am going to need to be able to pick up some of what is happening to the sides of the camera.

Does anyone have a recommend for a mic that will achieve a shotgun’s distance as well as pick up sound that occurs around the camera? In advance, thank you for your thoughts.
