July 25, 2013 at 4:50 am[Sascha Engel] “Could I not just export an XML from X and then import that XML to 7 and from there export an OMF, without any additional software?”
Nope… fcpxml is different than fcp 7 XML. So you do need Xto7 to get it over. A little cheaper then X2Pro. It translates very well, but you may need to re-arrange your tracks and clean up some stuff (disabled audio components etc.) that 7 doesn’t understand. It’s fairly easy. but X2Pro is easier… just press a button. 🙂
The bottom line with X is that while it’s relatively cheap, but if you need certain “pro” workflow functions, you need to spend a little more money. Trust me, it’s worth it…

July 25, 2013 at 5:36 amThank you. But if the FCPX has such a different XML how come it’s possible to import as XML into Resolve, but FCP7 won’t read it?

July 25, 2013 at 6:44 amResolve is not dead software. They keep upgrading it to including FCPXML import. Apple have never made a backwards path from X to 7 without third party apps so you will have to buy one of them if you edit in X.
You must be charging a low hourly rate if $146 is expensive compared to time spent on workarounds. If you plan to edit in X you will always need third party apps like X2Pro so cost it in terms of the next five jobs and still see if it still seems expensive.

July 25, 2013 at 7:10 amHahaha. Not only me. Israel happens to be one of the most expansive places in the world, with one if the worst salaries in the industry. Damn sad, but reality. You would not believe the hourly rate we can charge here.

July 25, 2013 at 7:31 amJust out of masochistic curiosity: where are you based and what is the general hour rate or rate per day shift of an offline or online editor?

July 25, 2013 at 7:32 amAnd yet they are shooting on an expensive camera compared to the Canon DSLR’s or the Blackmagic so someone in Israel must be getting a decent budget.
Australia is not exactly premium rates either but my time is worth more than the price of X and the X2Pro app.

July 25, 2013 at 7:35 amI do grade and sound post so my hourly rate includes facilities with Resolve, HDCam & digi beta decks but my base rate is $150 per hr with all the gear and specially designed and built rooms.
Editors with basic edit gear would charge less of course.

July 25, 2013 at 8:24 amThey rent good equipment, cause its not so costly to rent.
But yes, you hour rates are way above what is normal here.
1200.- shekel for a shift, which is 9 hours long, that’s around 400.- dollars for 9 hours of work!Sascha Engel

July 26, 2013 at 1:09 amFor a basic edit suite with editor that is low but not much different to editors who work from home here in Australia.
My rates are very different because it includes purpose built acoustic facilities with air con and hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment – much more overhead and equipment than an editor requires.
