Two questions: Graphic Elements & Freezing
Hi all. I have two questions:
1. How do I add graphic elements to a movie in Vegas? For instance, I want to be able to add an arrow pointing to someone.. or a thought bubble.. or a circle… etc etc. I don’t see any tools in Vegas to do that. If I have to create the image outside of Vegas in–say– Photoshop or Illustrator, how do I go about ensuring the object I create will be the right size and positioned exactly where I need it to be?
2. How do I STOP the movie on a frame temporarily. I like the technique of freezing the movie momentarily while the narrator talks or something (a la Good Fellas).. and maybe even slowly zooming in on the freezed frame.

A simply way is via a “wingdings” font

Take a look at the VELOCITY Envelope. Vol 1 #9 of my newsletters also talks about changing the speed of a clip.

I hadn’t even thought to do it with a font. Great idea.
But what about more complex graphics? Like the kind they do in reality shows with a thought bubble and text inside the thought bubble?
If it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. If it feels right, give it everything you’ve got.

You could build a thought bubble in Photoshop and use a alpha channel background. Then import it into Vegas and place it on the track above your video. Make sure properties are set to alpha premultiplied (dirty) or you will not get the transparancy. You can then move the bubble where you want using event or track pan and crop. You could then place a text event on the track above the bubble and move it into position.
