Two good utilities to have
Just have spent the last few months between two different locations where I have had to do editing. In the process I found myself with directories of footage in two different drives. To be sure that I didn’t delete footage, I’ve been using a small utility called Directory Compare, by Glenn Alcott.
https://www.galcott.com/It’s saved me a great deal of time allowing me to quickly see what files are different between two directories. Since Windows 7 does not include such a utility (not sure why MSFT eliminated that, as a utility to do that was in XP), I’ve found the small amount of money that Glen charges to be well worth the price. $29 as of this writing.
Glenn has a number of other utilities, but I’ve not used them as extensively as this one.
I use Directory Compare in conjunction with the wonderful backup utility from MSFT, called RichCopy, which is a graphical user interface for Xcopy. If you are moving huge numbers of files, especially over a LAN/SAN you should have that in your toolbox. It gives you a copy utility that is very robust, and can recover from errors. You can also script it quite extensively, and it has a number of built in presets of if/then elements to choose from.
Both of these really eliminate the need to buy a backup software package that may not be around in 5 years or so. I consider them a must have set of tools for the toolbox.
