Is it possible to store MXF files on one Mac Pro (running Media Composer 5.5) and allow a second system to access the same material via direct ethernet connection? Essentially I want to use one of our avids as a makeshift unity.

If you’re using OSX’s built in File Sharing feature, the Avid might not see the drive unless you use the “alldrives” console command. If the media is on system 1, and system 2 is connect via ethernet, I wouldn’t allow system 2 to render, import, or capture to system 1. That is because the Avid, by default is going to want to write files to the AvidMediaFiles>MXF>1 directory, but if you have two system trying to simultaneously write media to that folder, it will most likely cause problems. The Unity software changes this, where the Avid will create a folder based upon the computer name and then numerical numbers. So Instead of AvidMediaFiles>MXF>1 It would be AvidMediaFiles>MXF>Edit01.1

Just be careful about your media creation settings.
