Like it says above. Most of the footage was shot HD, some with a SD cam. I’m getting okay exports using default NTSC Widescreen (1.2121 pixel ratio) Main Concept settings but there’s still a hunk of motion noise.

I tried an uncompressed AVI export (just a portion of a file) and it does look way better, so I’m assuming it’s the mpeg2 compression adding the noise. Is there anything in the Advanced Video tab of the MainConcept export dialog I should tweak to minimize the motion noise?

Raising the bitrate in the render window, custom settings helps.

Use something other than the default settings.
If your video is under 70 min. long, use a CBR of 8,000,000.
If it’s over that length, use the settings as determined by this bitrate calculator.
I make two changes to the default settings in the calculator.
Set the Safety Margin to 5% from the default 1% and set “1 kilobit = 1000 bits”.
The latter is found after clicking the “Settings” button on the bottom left of the main screen.
Do it as a 2-pass render for maximum quality.

Thanks! The bitcalc is great and the know-how is even better. Going through a post-prod process has been helpful for slowly demystifying the the great black art of digital video. 🙂

I’m getting 9672kbs and all my motion noise is gone. Yay!

Glad to hear that it’s working for you.
One thing I forgot to mention is that, no matter what the calculator says, I never let my Max setting exceed 8,000,000.
This is because of cheap media and players as some of them have issues playing back high bitrate videos.
I’ve read where some folks are now saying 8,500,00 but that’s as high as I’d go.
BTW, stick to Taiyo-Yuden (preferred) or Verbatim DVD media as these two are generally recognized as the best on the market.
