Tv-studios run by mac?
Posted by Mike Johnson on May 15, 2007 at 12:39 amAre there any TV studios that are completely run by mac? (no pc’s – other gear welcome tho)
Perhaps some nifty fcp/xsan solution with kona/decklink?
I’m interested in workflow and ideas.

May 15, 2007 at 12:58 amI hear that KCBS here in Los Angeles here is. At least that is what I got from the Apple Event at NAB.
And I hear that part of the BBC in London is as well.
Why?

I’d check the Apple Pro site and see if they have anything.

If it’s a large multi-User SAN, then your best bet is to work with a local VAR / broadcast integration company as setting up a large system like that is not something you want to jump into without proper planning. Even seeing how someone else is all set up is only good for initial ideas. Once it gets beyond that there are a ton of factors to be considered, not the least of which is support, and generally only a local company that can come on site to see your situation going to work out much better than putting something together yourself.

May 15, 2007 at 1:01 pmPerhaps I need to be abit more clear what I’m after.
I would like to read a guide or perhaps article about some of these places.
What gear do they use, workflow etc? -

What gear do they use, workflow etc?”Those would only be available from something like the Apple Pro Stories at Apple.com, the websites of the production facilities themselves, the websites of the company(s) that did the setup, or through a trade magazine website.

May 15, 2007 at 3:05 pmI believe Granada TV in Bristol (UK) run an all Mac setup, with a few terabytes of networked storage and edit suites/dubbing suites all sharing. I think they’ve even a few ‘floating’ portable edit stations for producers etc. to log, trim and the like. No playout or anything like that AFAIK, but a pretty big throughput nonetheless
As Walter says, not something you want to do without reading the instructions first 😉
