We’ve had several inquiries about how to turn a logo into a flag and back again. This post covers turning a flag back into a still logo, a second post will cover turning a stiff logo into a flag.

It would be nice if there was a single slider to do this. We’ll try to figure out a way to make this really simple although with the flag being a physics-based system it’s not as easy as you’d think.

In the meantime here’s a technique that will get you close.

If you animate gravity to 0, slow the wind speed down to 0, and move the wind direction so it’s parallel to the flag (such as Angle=90 and Elevation=0 for a default flag), the waves will flatten out and the flag will get pretty smooth. Wind speed is what both flattens the flag and slows down the motion so you have to let it go for a while after gravity and wind directions are both at 0, then slowly bring it down to 0. When gravity and wind speed get to 0 the flag won’t move anymore.

This won’t give you a totally stiff board, but it will get the flag smooth enough that you can do a dissolve with a little mesh warp thrown in to make it perfect.

An additional trick you can do to make the flag even smoother is to rotate the flag 90 degrees so it is hanging down, and rotate the camera 90 too. This will make the flag *look* like it is waving to the side. With the flag in this position you can animate the gravity higher which will pull the flag even flatter.

    Hope that helps.
