    “Minority Report”.

Don’t know what you mean by height displaement. But put the layer in 3D space and move the camera around it. How you comp it into the 3D footage is a different matter.

Yep “Minority Report”, the scene where he reviewes old family videos on this sort of beta-holograph-projector.

    Hi
I have achieve this effect, importing the frame to photoshop and separating each thing into different layers. Then you re-build the layers (the background have to be completed by Photoshop work)
Then, make a 3D comp. where you can move your camera and you will fell the “matrix fx”.
The best way is to setup a still camera in the same position as your video one (take a still in the moment you want the FX to ocurr), so when you build your layers you have enough resolution to “travel” with your AE camera.
Lots of work, but the result is unbeliavable.
    hope it helps

    Hi there …
as far as I understand your effect is more like seperation of layers giving the whole thing that very cool and strange feeling of beeing 3D somehow.
The trouble with this method is that it works for still images, but not for moving images.
I want this sort of 3D holographic look for an opener for a DVD full of old fashioned 8mm footage.
The images would need to sort of “bleed” into z-space …

Anyway your tip is also very cool!!!

My initial thought is to use the video as a displacement map in the displacement channel of any 3D program. Then use the video as the color channel as well. Maybe even in the transparency channel.

This way the lighter the part of the image, the more forward it its, also, the more opaque it is (if you also use the transparency channel).

Apply this material to a flat plane. Then render out.

I love your post on the 3d hologram ect… although I think I’ll have to read it again to really understand how to do it… I read in a bio of you that you read a couple of books on direction and they tought you more of a how to develope the vision that you need to have when direction a piece… what r those book? I have just been getting into freelance video/editing and motion design i was in house at a studio and now i have branched out to doing freelance… things r good and i have some good clients, I’ve done good work (no awards yet but they are happy) and now some of the bigger ad agencys are starting to give me some small pieces (which i hope to turn into bigger pieces, fingers crossed)… and from what I read in your bio kinda sounds similar to what you went through on your rise to the top;)… is there any tips or pitfalls that I might want to watch out for, suggestions…

thanks for the advise in advance…

I don’t know about “Top”. When I’m getting the same jobs Ridley and Tony Scott get, then we’ll talk about the top 😉

Most important book of all for direction for me was “On Directing” by David Mamet. You can read it in one or two sittings.

Also “Rebel Without a Crew” by Robert Rodriguez.
