  • Trying to Turn a Vertical Video for my Horizontal Video

Posted by John Lee on January 9, 2018 at 10:32 pm

I have a Vegas project that is 1920×1080. I need to insert some video taken by an iPhone which was unfortunately filmed vertically. I’ve watched YT videos to make it horizontal, but all it does is turn it somewhat landscape, but nowhere near filling the screen (even when I play with the pan tool).

Any idea what I’m doing wrong? I de-selected the lock aspect ratio, but I still have a problem. The original film is 320 width x 568.

    Thanks for any advice.

Set your Vegas project properties (the frame size) to same size as your video is.

This project has other videos that are 1920×1080, so I need to keep the project settings as such.

If something is filmed vertically (320 x 568, in this case), is there a way to resize the video so that it fills a screen for a project that is 1920 x 1080?

Then you need to use Pan/Crop.

Right-click into the editing area of the Pan/Crop window and select “Match Output Aspect” while “Stretch to Frame Size” is unchecked.

Thank you for the reply, but I don’t get it. I went to the clip, right clicked and selected “Video Event Pan/Crop”, and the window popped up.

But nothing happens when I right click that pop-up window. I can’t seem to find “match output aspect” or “stretch to frame size”.

Also this is a video, not an image. Does that make a difference?

No, there is no difference. It works fine with video.

Don’t right-click the clip. Open Pan/Crop for that clip and right-click the frame inside the Pan/Crop window.

I tried right clicking inside the pan/crop pop-up window, but no dialogue box shows up. Instead, the cursor turns into a magnifying glass and the image shrinks.

    What am I doing wrong?

This is what right-clicking the video frame inside of Pan/Crop does here:

Thank you. The magnifying tool was on. Got it now.
