trying to output progressive
Posted by Chris Baldwin on November 6, 2006 at 11:57 pmI shot a program in 16:9 DVCPro50 30p
2 questions:
First:
I’m trying to create a QuickTime H.264 streaming file that is progressive. When I use compressor and change the output to progressive it says its going to take an hour for a 2 minute clip. Is this right? Should I worry about changing the format to progressive?Second:
The webpage where the file is going to live has a width requirement of no more than 678pixels. 640×360 is what my math tells me to output the file as. right? Thanks,

November 7, 2006 at 3:24 amH.264 takes a while to encode…and to get really goot progressing out of interlaced will take even longer so yes, 1 hour for a 2 min clips seems right to me.
And yes, 640×360 is correct for 16:9.

November 7, 2006 at 3:41 amHi Shane,
Thanks for the response. I guess I’m wondering if I shot the program natively in Progressive using an Panasonic SDX900. How do I ensure that when I output it via compressor that it stays progressive? Is that possible even?
So I output the 90 minute program as a H.264 QT hinted stream, 15fps @ 640×360 and the file size is 449MB.The same setting @ 320×180 produce a 220MB file which I feel is a much more palatable file size to stream but the file can’t be resized in the HTML page which is allocating a 640×360 space.(the client wants this larger size)

It will unless you choose an interlaced format, such as 30fps for output to tape. Tape is interlaced, and converting 24p to 30i…you will get interlacing. But, you are exporting for the web, so the progressive nature should stay just fine.

For 90 min, yeah…that will be the size. Think about it…90 min. That is pretty good for 90-min. You can adjust the quality level and audio compressor to get it lower, but really, that is a good number. Think of all the Movie Trailers you have seen at 15MB and 30MB…72MB at high def…and they are 3-5 min…tops. You are doing good.

November 7, 2006 at 5:10 amI don’t want to dominate your attention but, you brought up a question that I’ve been unsatisfied by the answers I’ve gotten so far.
So the SDX900 can shoot 30p and I’ve seen in its menu that it gives the option of progressive or interlace. This seems odd to me since I just chose 30p but whatever, everyone says you still shoot in Interlace even if you pick 30p.
Then I capture it into FCP and once its on the timeline its what? progressive or interlaced? To my knowledge, there is no project setup for 30p like there is for 24p or 24pa. Am I wrong? So if I am just using a project setup of DVCPro50 Anamorphic is that a progressive or interlaced timeline? And then when I output it is it automatically one or the other?
I shot it progressive because its a nicer image to me so how do I make sure I deliver that?
So for the web its ok to have progressive and for Standard Definition DVD’s is Compressor creating a progressive file for that?
THANKS!!!!!!!!

I have worked with footage from this camera only once, and it was 24p footage…shot at 29.97. So it had a filmic look, but was still 29.97. It wasn’t TRUE progressive, for there were the occasional interlaced frame (3:2 pulldown effect) but it wasn’t 30 interlaced frames. I am not familiar with the 30P setting, but I would assume that it would record 30 full frames instead of 60 interlaced fields. Does it LOOK different than 30i?
[Chris Baldwin] “Then I capture it into FCP and once its on the timeline its what? progressive or interlaced? “
Just DVCPRO 50…there is no progressive or interlaced setting. That is determined by the footage. If it is interlace, it will be interlaced in your project. If it is progressive, it will be progressive in the project.

It is what the footage is. When it is output, it is output what the footage is. If the footage is progressive, it’ll output progressive. It cannot create fields where none exist (each field being slightly different information). It may be an interlaced output, but both fields are the same image, so it will be 30 full frames. However, it is possible to make interlaced footage progressive, with plugins like film effects by http://www.nattress.com.

Again, if you shot progressive, your footage is progressive. No changing that.
