Trying to marry 16×9 and 4×3 movies in timeline without annoying distortion
HELP!
This seems like the vain (vein?) of my existence.
I have interviews of a friend’s rock band in 16×9. I have 4×3 footage of live performance shot in the 8mm app for iPhone. Trying to cut an EPK for the band (Electronic Press Kit)
Both look perfect in viewer.
When put into timeline, however, depending on sequence settings, one of the two is smushed – or stretched. (and that is the way they get exported, horrible)
We spent HOURS trying to fix. To no avail. To be honest, I have had this problem for years with mixed media.
HELP??!!

You need to open the clips into the Viewer, and set the DISTORT to 0. But then you need to push in 33% in order to fill in the 16:9 frame. That’ll really lower the quality. But, that’s how you use 4:3 in 16:9 without distortion.

Where do you choose 0??
And how do you push in 33%

Change the numbers to 0, then “push in” or scale to 33%.
FWIW its bain, it seems like the bain of your existence.

Aspect Ratio needs to be set to 0. And SCALE is where you adjust the…scale.

I changed the numbers to 0 as you said, and scale to 33 in the viewer, the image now disappears to a black box.
I put the scale back to 0 and there is still not image. (just to check)
And what I mean my no image, there’s now a black 4×3 square when played. You can hear the audio of the band playing fine.
So, this is no bueno.

By the way, once again, I said that in the viewer, it looks perfect.
Once I put it in the timeline, it’s distorted.
You guys are suggesting altering the image in the viewer – this seems like a very odd solution, and it’s not working anyway.
(And FYI, aspect ratio is already 0.)
Half of this problem is getting people on the same page as what I am actually talking about. So frustrating!
In the sequence timeline – the 4×3 image gets stretched into a 16×9 space. (or vice versa, the 4×3 images looks great in a different sequence and the widescreen images get smushed.)
So, are we talking about the same thing here?

Yes, we know what you mean.
OK…I guess you don’t know the trick on how to do this. First off, cut the clip into the sequence. Put what you want, where you want. THEN…double click on that clip in the sequence to load it into the viewer. THERE is where you adjust the ASPECT RATIO and the SCALE.

Wow my post was pretty bad, that’s what I get for hastily posting from iphone on lunch break. I meant change the ratio to 0 and increase scale by 33% (as Shane said scale will be 133%).
Put the 4:3 clip on the 16:9 timeline and double click the clip to open in the viewer. Make your changes there.
