    So, I have a massive project I am getting together, which takes stuff from some pretty huge clips (all about 4 gb each) and uses maybe a small portion (5-10 seconds) of them.

    I want to save and trim these files into a new folder so I can color them in photoshop (yes I work on color on my video in photoshop lol), but I would really like to not have to process the entire file.

    So I want a way where I can trim my files and then re-save the project (without destroying the source files, leaving them in the backup archive) into a new folder of usable clips which I will process.

    When I do an archive (using export) it doesn’t do this.
    when I do a save as and copy media and trim unused, it doesnt do this.

    in both of these instances it copies the entire file over again.

    How do I prevent this in my future workflow

    and how do I preserve these current edits whilst making a new copy of this project and its media?

    You never mentioned what the specifics of your media file(s).

    To quote the Vegas help file.
    “Audio/video events are saved in a new AVI file. You can trim DV AVI, uncompressed AVI, and Sony YUV AVI files. Because of the lossy nature of other video formats, those video files will not be trimmed, but will simply be copied to the project folder.”

    Depending on your file specific there are tools out there that can trim LongGOP compressed files without re-encoding. The trims are restricted to I-frame boundaries.
    Avidemux is one such tool and it is free.

    You can trim your large media and use those trimmed results in your NLE.

    The formats are .Mov and .Mp4 – obviously lossy and not compatible with this function.

    what would be the best way to trim these down manually? I could go through each one and make a subclip, no?

    As stated tools like Avidemux can help. TMPGenc Smart renderer is another tool, but not free. There are probably others but I do not know about them.

    If you want to take a large file a trim out one or more short pieces to separate files, use a trimming tool like Avidemux. Now you have the small pieces you want to edit in Vegas and/or Photoshop.

    Avidemux only handles a limited number of file types. MP4 is your likely main output option here. No MOV option. Vegas only handles mpeg-2 and AVC/H.264 in MP4 files. I don’t know what codecs are in your MP4 and MOV files. You never mentioned.

    MP4 and MOV can contain everything from lossy to lossless codecs. They are just generic containers.

    Another workflow is to trim out the unwanted stuff and render those pieces out, from Vegas, to a high quality intermediate format like DNxHD, Cineform, XAVC. Use those pieces in your editing. Then going back and forth between Vegas and other tools you don’t have to worry about quality losses from re-encodes.

    Subclips don’t exist.
    A subclip is just an in/out pointer to your project’s media. It does not exist outside of Vegas.
