I have a back desk top i am needing to use during repair of main system listed below. The older system is playing back very jerky video at preview 1/2 frame rate and even 1/4. Is it the video card Geforce 7800 GT or the processor a core duo 6700 @ 2.66mhgz – 4 GB ram or some of all. Need to use this for a bit, ANY ideas what needs to be beefed up?

AVCHD? A core duo 6700 @ 2.66mhgz could handle HDV. If it’s AVCHD, you can render each file as DV widescreen proxies, edit those easily, then replace the files before rendering from your project media files tab. Right click and select replace. To edit AVCHD, you really need an i7.

It is really important to understand that Intel had a false start with it’s multi-core technology. There is Core Duo and then there is Core 2 Duo. Core Duo was a horrible 32-bit chip based on Pentium technology. It was actually slower than a comparable single core Pentium for video editing and should be avoided at all costs. Core 2 Duo is the second generation technology that is the minimum that should be used for HD and then as Danny said, only HDV and not AVCHD.

If you have a Core Duo, it is woefully inadequate for HD editing.
