  • Trying to get a transition not block another video clips on the same display area

Hello everyone. I’m going to try to explain the best way I can what I want to do and what my problem is. I’m not an expert so please take that in consideration.

I’m working with Final Cut Pro X.

I have more than 8 video clips, all of them have different duration.

I re sized the clips so that 4 fit on the display area at the same time. Then I added clips at the end of each clip on the first group so when one clip ends first than the others, another clip takes it place.

    Example:
    |———————–|
    |clip1-CLIP5|clip3-CLIP7|
    |———————–|
    |clip2-CLIP6|clip4-CLIP8|
    |———————–|

I want to transition between each clip change using the STATIC transition. This way, when clip1 ends first than clips2,3 and 4, the transition kicks in and CLIP5 takes clip1 place.

On the timeline, I have each group of clips on separate storylines.

This is the order of the storylines as seen on the timeline:

    clip4-CLIP8
    clip3-CLIP7
    clip2-CLIP6
    clip1-CLIP5

    Problem:
When I apply the transition to the storyline on the bottom (clip1-CLIP5) the transition does run only for those clips. When I apply the transition to any other storyline, for example clip3-CLIP7, the transition is seen blocking all video clips under below that specific storyline.

I tried to find a way to resize or make the transition run only on the selected clip but I wasn’t able to do it.

Can someone here help me? Thank you.

This could be a challenge in X. Here instead of tracks, x views everything as layers of sorts, so if you apply a filter or transition to the top “Layer” it covers everything, even if the image on that layer does not. Based on what your doing it may be incredibly challenging to complete in x using this method.
My best recommendation (in this program) would be to complete each sequence separately first as a full screen item, export it. and re-import the “finished” sequences as separate clips with their transitions already in place, then they can be re-sized accordingly.

Wow… even as I write it it sounds like a pain… but it’s the best I can think of.

Otherwise, try 7, After-effects, or possibly motion to achieve the same result without the same level of labor.

    Good Luck!

Try this. Stack all four layers of clips. Select the first set of connected clips and make a compound clip (OPT+G). Do the same with the 2nd set of connected clips and the 3rd. What you’ll end up with is one primary storyline, and 3 compound clips connected to it. Open the compound clips and apply the static transition to the cuts. Back out to your project and resize the compounds so that they all fit on the screen at the same time.
