  • Trying to create surround sound test file – LF Channel Issues

Posted by Ian Oakley on May 21, 2009 at 9:15 am

I’m trying to create a 5.1 test file. To do this I’m creating test audio that cycles through each 5.1 channel in turn – all of which is fine until I get to the LF channel. If I place a lf clip in the project, turn the LF bass clef all the way up and the centre down, it doesn’t matter where I pan that clip, it still bleeds over into other channels. Because I’m trying to generate a test clip that cycles through each individual channel, I need to be able to have a piece of audio on the LF channel only without it coming out of any other channels…

    help!!

    many thanks

LF is just that the low frequencies of audio run through the sub-woofer. are you sure that your test track is actually below the frequency of the speakers so it only comes from the sub? If the frequency is ranging too high the sub-woofer can’t do it all and it will be spilled into other speakers. Push the position of the LF track to the front speakers so that it doesn’t bleed into all of them, avoiding the rear speakers.
Let me know how that works.
LF is usually part of a MIX and listeners don’t really notice that there is something that’s supposed to be LF, but coming from the speakers.

    Hi Jon

    Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I’ve been using an 80.00Hz sine file to test this. I understand that LF is meant to be drawn from the other files, but we’re trying to create a file that can test surround speakers one at a time.

    thanks
