Trying to create Quicktime reference movie
Here is my problem. I am fairly new to FCP and jsut recently learne about the Reference movie (by unclicking the “Make self-contained movie”). But it seems like it will only make a quick reference file if everything is fully rendered (meaning the bluish-grayish bar on top of the timeline). it won’t make a fast file if it is dark green on the timeline. I have a 2 hour sequence that take an hour to make a reference Quicktime file. If i take off the filters and distort from attributes (both need to be stripped away), then I will get a full rendered bluish-gray bar on top and the refernce file only takes 4 or so minutes to make. Is this normal? what could be wrong?
I already tossed away all my preference files…though i am still working witht he same timeline as before so I don’t know if that effects this timeline. I went and tried all diferent kinds of Timeline settings.

If you have filters and distortion, you need to render it first in your timeline. Then your QT reference file should export in about 4 minutes.

Ok i guess. that takes an hour and a half. I thought having a dark green bar on top of the timeline was good enough.

And that reference file is going to reference your RENDER files as pointed out. So the minute you make a change and that render file is deleted by FCP, your QT reference file will be useless.
The reference file is great for temporary things, like an export of a long project. You may like to export a reference file to then send to compressor for compression. But don’t count on using that reference file later down the road after you’ve made changes or media managed or redigitized and rerendered for example.
