Try: Duplicate Project Result :”Two or More Media Files… Same Name”
Posted by Massimo Verona on November 6, 2012 at 12:18 amI am not too swift at understanding the whole database model here.
Environment: MBP Early 2011 i7 2.3; Lion 10.7.5, FCPX 10.0.0.6, 8 GB ; project on boot drive 300 GB SSD, also backing up to TIme Machine
Tried:
1)Duplicate project on an external drive ( project plus used clips, no rendering files because it’s disaster planning, not planning to use it)
2) Error message in pic below3) I don’t understand how to deduce what the duplicate filename is, it would be nice if it told me.
Failing as fast as I can at writing producing.

November 6, 2012 at 7:27 pmThrough assiduous study, I was able to solve this one.
This also solves a related error message “can’t merge events ” caused by the same thing.
1) The problem is caused by having the filename ( i.e. “mvi_0001.mov”) referenced in two different events which are both used in the project. In my case it was my company logo ( like the Universal flyover thing you see at the beginning of all their movies)
2) This causes at least two possible errors: When you try to:
a: Duplicate the Project on another drive as backup ( The Project has two or more events all containing the filename)
b: Merge the two Events ( each of which has “mvi_0001.mov” in it) ……It throws an Error, but doesn’t tell you the names of the Events or the Filenames in them.
To Fix:
1) Select your project and open the Inspector (will be upper right hand corner)
2) See which Events your Project contains
3)Select the Events listed in left Event list and switch back and forth between viewing different Events to find out which filename has been erroneosly imported into more than one event.
4) Trash the duplicated filenames in Events.
5) This cause a “source gone ” red spot on timeline when I deleted the dupe, but I then Merged Events ( File Menu after selecting the Events you want merged) and it automatically refound the needed, previously duplicated File.
Use at your risk, it was scary when it it trashed the file but I have so many backups it doesn’t matter.
But it DID allow me to then merge the events and I believe dupe Project to another drive.Failing as fast as I can at writing producing.

March 6, 2013 at 6:48 pmI had the same problem.
I’ve try many things before, so I’m not 100% sure it’s this final solution that worked. But I think so.
The trick is using the compound clip function. I didn’t knew that you can copy a compound clip from a event to another. You can. So:
1) open your unduplicatable project, select all clip and compound it. It will appear in your event (let’s say event A)
2) In the event browser, create a new event (called B).
3) take the compound clip from event A, drag it in event B : It’s suppose to copy affiliate clips in the new event (B).
4) Associated with event B, create a new project, put your compound clip from event B in it, uncompound it if you like.
5) go in the project library, right-clic on your new project and clic “consolidate project media”
Bouya. It worked for me. Maybe by copying compound clip fcpx didn’t care for clips names and rename it for me, it’s hard to tell for this project: to many clips came from a derush from a media manager made on fcp7, so I have many clip with -1, -2 , -3 extension.
I don’t have the time right know to double check.
Sorry for my english.

June 16, 2013 at 9:23 pmI tried this approach with the compound clip and when I attempted to copy it into my new event I received the ‘operation cannot be completed’ error, the problem, once again, the two media files with the same name.
My next attempt is to relink all my project files even though there are none missing and elect to copy them into the current Event file. My hope is I may then be able to copy the project into a sparse disk image and put this one on the shelf. Knock wood.
Surely the good folks at Apple who are developing FCPX will address this and other data management challenges in an update quite soon.
PLEASE?!
