True Constant Bitrate
I have an issue that’s reared from a 4 year old project we need to update. We have a 4 stream playback server that requires MPEG2 streams with muxed audio for each file, for solid playback. Our workflow back then was to use a hardware encoder capturing from Digibeta. We no longer have that hardware encoder. We found at the time that the encoding software we had did not result in a solid enough CONSTANT bit rate for the server. (Compressor 1) There was too much fluxuation in the bitrate even set at contant. We also had to demux each file and mux audio back to ensure that the Constant flag would be put at the header of each file so the server could run flawlessly. I think we used MPEG Streamclip for that. We have Compressor 2 and are going to upgrade soon to FCS 2. I’m looking at Episode and Squeeze.
1) What software encoder would deliver a true constant bitrate file?
2) Is there any software encoder that could mux audio to an MPEG2 stream at the same time it encodes?
3) Is there a software encoder that puts a constant flag at the header of the file automatically, so the server reads the file correctly?
4) Do I need to explain myself better?

One more thing…
We need to deliver at 10 mbps. I see Compressor only goes to 9 for constant.Steve Radley

I ran some tests in the demo version of Episode. The results are good. I could push it to 14mbps. However, when I check the file in Bitrate Viewer it says it’s VBR. The video server playing back the files needs CBR. It seems whatever setting I have, it comes out as VBR in Bitrate Viewer. Any ideas?
