I have some footage that I shot on the canon xha1. I wanted to get the best image to work with in post so I used the true color preset. As I understand it, a true color preset gives you an incredibly soft image (indeed it did) because the setting basically disables the camera’s built in sharpening filter. Fans say this is good because a post production studio’s sharpening filter is going to work better every time simply by the fact that it’s going to be running on a larger processor (computer vs. in-camera processor) and will not have to be sharpening in real time (as when the camera captures and sharpens the image at once). Some people though, as I am now reading, have nothing but bad things to say about sharpening filters (especially the one that comes with FCP) and say that post sharpening tools create an abundance of noise.

I’m wondering which is indeed the best route to go when looking the sharpest image. Do post production sharpening filters operate better than on-board camera sharpen settings? Should I sharpen in post or just crank up the sharpen settings on my true color settings? Are there sharpen plug ins which work better than FCP’s standard sharpen filter? What are anyone’s opinion on the true color preset for crisp images?
