True Black
Hi all… I’m sure this is a setting or something I’m just not configuring correctly during the rendering process.
Anyway, when I’m in AE and running RAM previews, all black (either my background or any other part of my video that is black) turns out just that… black, the way it should look. But (and again, I’m still playing with settings) when I render it out, all the colors, black is by far the most noticeable, it all seems “washed” out. Black doesn’t appear as a true black. It’s almost if the contrast is all screwed up.
Anyway, my end goal is to put these vids on DVD and the web. I’m open to all advice anyone can give me as to what output formats I should be using.

since your RAM previews are looking ok, im guessing its not your color management or color bpc. It’s probably a bad render setting of a codec. First thing I always do if there’s a problem, I render out a 10 second 10 bit 4:4:4 RGB uncompressed AVI. That usually gives away 99% of problems.

Thanks for the reply Chris. I’m not totally sure where to change that setting. If I select AVI, I can find compression options that allow 8 bit 4:2:2 YUV, but I’ve selected no compression. Doing that, the output is now appearing correctly, however, the file size is not feasible. 10 seconds is about 350MB.
Is there a compression and codec combination I can use that will still allow for “true” colors to be used, or should I just expect to use washed out colors? I can’t imagine that’s the case.

if your going for web, use sorenson squeeze and for dvd use a dvd authoring program from a high quality master ouput from AE or even try AE’s built in mpeg2 encoder at 8 mbps. If you own Prod. Edition of adobe, you won’t even need to render, just use dynamic link.

Not sure if this helps but….
I was having same issues with .avi outputs so I tried one with all the same setting except I changed it to .mov (quicktime) and whaaalaaa…. TRUE black and oddly enough, .mov file size was 1/2 size of .avi
