We’ve had the strangest issue crop up with our video capture and I’m curious if anyone else has seen anything similar or has any ideas.

We recently upgraded our capture computer in our main studio. Prior to the upgrade we were running XP/Vegas 6 with a Blackmagic DeckLink SDI to capture our SDI production stream. We had no issues.

When we upgraded to Vegas 10, it turned out that we had to install service pack 3. Unfortunately for whatever reason I could not get SP3 to take. So our IT department replaced the computer with a newer one, with faster processor and more RAM, and we upped our capture disc to a 2 tb over the previous 1 tb. The new disc has the same or better performance specs than the old disc. The OS is XP with SP3, built on a clean drive.

The issue that’s cropped up is thus: At the beginning of many captures we get some digital garbage video + audio for maybe 4-8 frames. That’s not a problem as it clears right up, but on about 1/4 of our shoots, the audio stream ends up being about 4-8 frames longer than the video, and they’re out of sync. For all but one of the instances, simply ungrouping the audio, lining up the end point with the video, and re-grouping solves the problem. We have not been able to identify a pattern in when the sync will be off. Sometimes it’s when there’s digial noise, sometimes not. Sometimes when the application has been restarted clean, sometimes not. Sometimes when the computer has been restarted, sometimes not.

I’m checking to make sure I have the latest and greatest drivers, but other than that does anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting this?
