  • Trouble with tiling a material

Posted by Jack Cook on February 3, 2010 at 7:15 pm

I’ve made an ocean with islands in it (Caribbean) and I’m using an ocean shader I downloaded from the web. The ocean shader looks really good, with waves with foam, etc., all of which are made using layers in the material channels. The problem is that the scale of the pattern is too big, and I want to scale it down, so I tried tiling and putting in various numbers for the repeats. But the material doesn’t scale down at all. No matter how many tiles I specify, the material looks the same. This is using UVW, the default mapping mode.

I also tried mapping in Flat mode, rotating the material to P=90, but it still doesn’t tile. It seem no matter what I do I cannot get the pattern to become smaller. Is there something I’m overlooking? Is it something to do with the layer construction of the material?

    thanks,
    Jack

Hard to say without seeing the material, but my guess is that it relies a lot on noises, and then noises are set up to us world space. If so, go through them and set the space to object or texture.

Thanks, Adam. It is all noises. I went through and found that they were all set to Texture, so I changed them to Object, just to see if it would affect the mapping, and there doesn’t seem to be any difference. I’ve put a file called Mapping.c4d on my ftp site here:

    ftp://ftp.whoi.edu/whoinet/graphicsftp/jcook/

It has a plane with the material, and another plane under it with just dark blue. It’s the top plane that has the problem. If you can look at it and discover somthing, that would be great.

    thanks

Oh damn … changing it to UV (2D) should fix the problem.

Thanks, Adam, that seems to have done it. It changed the look of it somewhat but it’s still good, and I can use it this way. I’m not sure I really understand why changing it to UV (2D) worked, but it did.
