  • Trouble with ProRes 422 playback

Finally took the plunge into ProRes, but I’m having some issues.

    System Specs:
    Quad Core 2.5 G5
    10.4.11
    Quicktime 7.3.1
    4.5 Gigs of RAM
    GeForce 6600
    FCP 6.0.2
Kona 3 with Kbox (version 4.0 software)
    Ciprico U320 1.2 TB Array (Raid 0)

    I used an IntelMac to transcode AVC-Intra P2 files into ProRes 422 (1080 x 1920 23.98)

The ProRes files seem to play fine at the finder level, but FCP is totally hanging on loading clips and refuses to play back.

Additionally, my Kona output is not displaying to my Panasonic BT-LH2600 monitor.

Loading a DVCProHD project works fine – my system acts like it should.

    What’s the problem?

Are you sure you are in the proper easy setup? Sounds like you have something not selected properly.

Hit control-q and choose the AJA KOna 3 ProResHQ 1080 23.98 preset.

Make sure to check the VIew/Video Playback setting. Easy Setup doesn’t automatically change that for you. Set it to AJA Kona 1080psf 23.98 10bit.

[Michael Alberts] “Easy Setup doesn’t automatically change that for you”

Yes it should. Sometimes it might not, but it most definitely should.

I forgot to update the Kona drives to V 5.1.

    Everything is just ducky.

    Man this stuff looks great…

    Awesome. I like ducky.

    Ducky is good.

Easy Set-up does not change the View setting. True.

Hmm, really? When I switch from 8 bit to 10bit or Sd to HD via easy setup, my view changes.

    Yours doesn’t…?

You can set the video playback in the easy setup prefs (audio/video settings). It should change.

You’re right, is SHOULD change but it doesn’t. I can’t think of a time when it ever has. We have three systems here, one Kona2, one Kona3x and one Kona3. The view setting doesn’t change on any of those systems.

[Michael Alberts] “The view setting doesn’t change on any of those systems. “

For instance, if you go from 1080i 10bit to 525i 8 bit, your kona stays in HD?
