  • Trouble with Digital Juice full page transitions

Opps, I forgot to click on Add New Post so this reguest can be found elsewhere on this forum…

I’m trying to use Digital Juice’s full page transtions in FCP5. So far I’m not succesful. I have used the Juicer to get the clip but when I place it on the timeline the alpha channel is missing. I called Digital Juice who told me to drag the clip directly to desktop and import into FCP suggesting that this would solve the problem. It didn’t. I called Apple TC who told me that the DV videos don’t have enough room for the alpha channel so I’d need to annimate it??? All my attempts have been unsuccessful in getting the clip to be transparent in the alpha sections of the clip. I hope someone can help me with this as my project is on hold waiting for a successful answer.

    Thanks

It sounds like your export settings from the Juicer are incorrect.

[Clifford L. Frazier] “I called Apple TC who told me that the DV videos don’t have enough room for the alpha channel so I’d need to annimate it???”

Well, that might have been the case before,
but the Apple tech must have missed the episode of
    “EXTREME MAKEOVER: DV Edition”
in which they added on enough room for Alpha
(and his entire family) to the DV codec.

    😉

I’m not sure what your troubles are, but I CAN tell you that I have successfully used Digital Juice FS transitions on many occasions.
No need for Juicer with FCP.
When you get the clip into your FCP viewer, click on the drop down box and have it display the alpha channel only, to confirm that it is there.
If it is there then you know your problem is introduced when you go to the timeline, if not there, then you have an import issue.

Have you been successful with a Digital Juice lower third?
Or is it just the FS?
Try a few other FS, I guess its possible that you have some corruption on your DJ disc.
I know this is fairly obvious, but its all I got.

    That reminds me:

Digital Juice has acknowledged a problem with a shipment (or several) of discs that had MISSING ELEMENTS.

Are you sure there IS an Aplha Channel on the effect in question.

DJ will send a replacement if you find you have a problem disc.

Just make sure when you use the Juicer you’re set for Millions + or Animation + Alpha (I can’t remember what it says) in the Quicktime Export dialog. We use the Juicer all the time here for full screen wipes and don’t have issues with them as the Alpha channel comes through just fine.

Thank you for the information. I did as you suggested and brought the DJ clip into the viewer. I saw the Alpha channel there, but when I put the clip on the timeline, I don’t get the alpha channel. Is there a setting in FCP5 that I’ve not chosen that could be producing this problem? Please advise. I’m going to try a lower third next.

    Hey Walter,

…to juice or not to juice?

I’m curious as to why you use Juicer.
I’ve never had a problem just dragging DJ into FCP.
When I work on an avid, I’ve juiced (obviously),
but it takes a long time, and therefore, find the workflow a bit clunky.

    What am I missing?
Is there any quality difference if you juice?

so in your canvas window (after you’ve seen the alpha in the viewer) you seen only black (nothing) when you switch to view alpha?
    Thats a head scratcher…
I guess do the basics (re-boot, repair permissions, re-check sequence settings)
I do not know of any setting that would cause your problem (doesn’t mean there isn’t one)

keep us posted as to what eventually fixes your issue

Thanks to everyone for the offers and suggestions, the saga continues however. I did call Apple Pro services and they too suggested that I delete the preferences, etc. I did so; I even started a new project from scratch but the problem persists. Now, I continued to experiment. I tried creating text using the text generator, the text overlaid the video showing the video where text was not, but when I tried either the lower 3rds or the full transition from Digital Juice the alpha didn’t work. Now, I went further, I took the disc downstairs to my desktop dual G5 running the same version (different purchase and copy) of FCP5. The clips worked fine. I could drag the file onto the desktop, import it into FCP5 and it worked fine. I checked the settings on my dual G5 with my Powerbook G4 and the settings were the same. But for some reason, I cannot get this to work on my PowerBook. I have 2 gigs of ram and the lastest versions of Tiger and FCP. What is so frustrating is not even the Apple experts can give me any viable solutions. Hope you can.

Hello everyone. I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to write the conclusion to this matter. But the last time I wrote, I stayed up until 5 AM trying to figure this out. As you recall, the problem was the Digital juice clips worked on my dual processor G5 but not on my laptop G4. Well, after changing one thing and then another, I was at my wits’ end. So, I decided to do the radical. This is especially true in light of the fact that Apple was not giving me good alternatives noreover they suggested that I reinstall teh softwear. Though I am not trashing Apple.

The short of this is that after being so consistently unsuccessful, I decided to run the updates utility. When that was all said and done, and FCP5 had been upgraded my problem was solved. Now, mind you, I’d just had a new HD installed on while in Australia. Be that as it may, when I ran the updates and then I tried the program, it worked fine. I hope this helps everyone. Thank you enough to be concerned and helpful

PS Does anyone know where the fcprescue download is available. I tried on the apple site, but even running a search came up with nothing. I got this idea from the lynda.com product called FCP Essential Editing. The problem is when i typed the url, I got a page saying that it didn’t esist. So, I hope someone can help. Thanks again.
