    Hi!

I having trouble with a track and hoping you wizards can help.

I signed an NDA so I can’t share images, but the problem is easy to describe.

I’m trying to track the surface of a shiny knife so I can add a blood streak.

Tutorials I’ve found are all for tracking things like monitors, phones, ipads etc. Normally I would draw a tracking spline around the object and then an interior spline to cut out the reflective part. My problem is that this knife does not have a frame around a screen like an iphone – every bit of it is reflective and constantly changing.

FYI I’m using Mocha Pro in After Effects 25.6.0 on Mac Studio (Apple M2 Max, 32GB RAM, Mac OS 15.7.2).

I’m sure someone out there has run into an issue like this. Any thoughts??

    Thanks in advance…

    talk soon!

    Hi John –

Thanks for replying – and so sorry to leave you hanging! I got taken off the project where I was tracking this knife, and had to deal with a stack of other things, and now I’m back on it.

We don’t have any stock footage like that – but the problem is basically the same as the one outlined here at around 6:37 –

However, the shot this lady is working on has tracking marker crosses on the surface. She also tracks using a portion of a thin frame going around the edge of the shiny table surface. The problem is that my shot is just a reflective knife moving around and turning in space – basically nothing but reflection, so I don’t know what to grab onto.

I’m attaching a simple iphone video that emulates what the knife is doing in our shot…

Thanks in advance for any help!!

John – thank you SO MUCH for putting this together! This is really above and beyond the call of duty. Once again I am swamped with other things but I will try this out sometime in the next couple of week hopefully. I’m not that experienced with AI so I might have some annoying questions at that point. Again I really appreciate the effort you put in here….

    Best,
