Trouble streaming mp4 on Droid
Posted by David Dinenna on December 1, 2011 at 11:15 pmI have the following video streaming with out issue on iOS devices and standard desktop but the audio is out of synch on the Droid and it keeps stopping to load itself.
The video is a mp4/H.264, AAC audio at 128 and dimensions are 640×368.
Here’s the link to test…

Does anyone know what I could do to fix this on the Droid without causing an issue on iOS and desktop?
Any help is much appreciated!!

December 1, 2011 at 11:40 pmI usually maintain the iPhone preset for video…and that seems to work well cross-platform for both iOS and Android in my experience.
Do you have a clip that runs on an iPhone well?

December 1, 2011 at 11:59 pmThanks. The link above works great on the iPhone just not the Droid. I’m using Handbrake to encode to a mp4 from a avi file. I got the streaming issue under control but the audio is out of synch on the Droid still.
I noticed in my Handbrake options the audio source says “1 Unknown (PCM_S16) (2.0 ch)”… could that be the issue? The avi file uses a uncompressed wav file.

December 2, 2011 at 12:33 amHave you tried Adobe Media Encoder to do the encoding?
I’m on Windows, but I’ve had no issues with using the iPhone H264 preset for iOS and Android.
(With Android, I’ve noticed that performance between phones and OS versions can sometimes be different. Have you checked it on more than one Android?)

December 2, 2011 at 12:45 amThanks. I only have CS3 so I don’t think I have the media encoder. Can that be downloaded? If not, are there other encoders you recommend? I’ve tried many and Handbrake has always had the best result until now.

December 2, 2011 at 12:56 amYes, you have Media Encoder, but I don’t think there are any iPhone presets back that far…CS3 and the iPhone were released about three days apart in 2007.
Would QuickTime Pro produce a more tolerant file?

December 2, 2011 at 2:51 amI just encoded with QT Pro and it works great on the Droid now – BUT now it doesn’t work on my Apple device… this is so frustrating!! Have you used QT Pro?

December 2, 2011 at 2:17 pmI haven’t used QT Pro for this purpose i’m afraid…I have Media Encoder in CS 5.5, which has no problem exporting a cross-compatible file in my experience.
…I’m just trying to brainstorm some options for you.

December 2, 2011 at 5:47 pmworks fine on my droid (not sure if you replaced the one that didn’t work)
for handbrake, make sure you do not encode high profile 4, only use 3.1
4 is not supported on most droids.

December 2, 2011 at 5:51 pmThat’s good news. So the video and audio were synced on your Droid? It’s still out of sync on mine…
