  • Trouble smoothing model from Pro E (or similar)

Posted by Brett Waszkelwicz on December 10, 2008 at 5:04 pm

I have some STL files of soft drink packaging straight from the manufacturing workflow. They originated from Pro E or a similar engineering type of software. The geometry is pretty clunky, and I’m having issues getting it smooth. Careful use of phong shading almost gets it there, but I can’t get the last ‘wrinkles’ out. I’ve tried optimizing and untriangulating (to a basic degree), both of which have minimal effect. Attached are screen grabs of the raw geometry as I received it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Brett

Unfortunately it can be almost impossible to get a perfect surface with an object like this having lots of long skinny triangles. If possible see if they can give you the object in .obj format, which supports the importation of normals information (normals tag) and produces a much nicer surface.

If that’s not possible perhaps they can give you a STEP or .igs file which you or someone you know can then export to .obj (I have Rhino and I’d be happy to do the conversion for you, assuming it’s straightforward).

I have procured both STEP and igs files. I would be very grateful if you could convert one to an obj for me. Certain agreements preclude me from posting the file publicly. Is there another way I can get it to you?

    Thanks again!
