  • Trouble recording from Premiere to Sony Deck

I’m very confused. I’m trying to “export to tape” from Premiere to a Sony HVR-M15U HDV DVCAM using the iLink cable from my laptop (it didn’t work from my desktop either). Premiere sees the deck and controls the deck, but either Premiere isn’t sending the video, or the deck isn’t taking in the video. Nothing records. I’ve tested the deck’s output to my monitor with a good tape, and it’s fine. I’ve tried only recording B&T and it doesn’t work. I’ve tried restarting everything, and I’ve been through every setting on the deck and I get nada. I’m running Firewire 800 to a G-Drive External drive that has both Firewire 800 and 400, then I’m running a Firewire 400 cable to the iLink port on the deck. I don’t know if there’s a better way to do that.

    I’m using
MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 running OX 10.8.2 or
Mac Pro (Early 2009) 2 X 2.26 Quad core Intel Xeon running OS 10.7.5
    Premiere Pro CS6 (6.0.2)
    Sony HVR-M15U HDV DVCAM deck
    DVCAM tape stock
I’m in the DV setting (720X480)

Also – when I check my Sequence Setting in Premiere, all of my options are greyed out. Is that normal?

Any thoughts? I’m just going to have to take my media into the studio tomorrow and dump it down, but I sure would like to be able to use this stupid deck I bought.

    Thanks in advance!!

I doubt that your G-drive can convert Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 to feed your VTR. Try going Firewire 400 through the entire chain.

If you send bars & tone from your computer directly to the input of your VTR (no G-drive), does that work?

It’s generally not good practice to have storage and input/output on the same Firewire port on any non-linear edit software.

Thanks Bill. I thought that might be the problem. I didn’t have a cable that would do the job. The new cable came today – iLink 4 pin to a Firewire 800. I’ve plugged the deck in, and I’m having the same trouble. I can capture video with no problem. When I “export to tape” Premiere has no problem controlling the deck. But I only get black.

When I go to my Sequence Settings, the “Playback Settings…” box is grayed out. According to the Adobe Help menu, that’s where I should go to make sure I have the correct settings.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

Sorry Bill et al – 2 minutes after my last post I finally figured it out. In Preferences, under Playback, I needed to have “Adobe DV” selected.

    Thanks for your help.
