  • Trouble importing Sony MXF into Premiere CS5.5/6

    Hello everyone,

I’m having a LOT of trouble with some Sony MXF files that were given to me by a convention. They were recorded on professional Sony cameras, but I have still been unable to open the files for editing in anything but Sony Vegas (Which I have no clue how to use).

Basically, the MXF files came in separate folders with XML files for each with the video and audio streams attached together in one file. Everything runs smoothly in VLC Media Player when checking for feedback.

When importing the files into Premiere, it only gives me access to the audio stream and nothing else. I’ve searched the internet and contacted companies etc to no avail. I have some Lo-Res proxies that I could use in the meantime (MP4), but I really want to use these full-res files.

I have no idea whatsoever about how these files were transfered but it looks like whoever transfered them used the appropriate Sony transfer software. Any ideas anyone?

    Many thanks,
    Ben

my first thought is to be sure to keep the whole folder structure of the disc or cards.
did you try then to import your media via media browser?

The folder structure provided hasn’t been changed from camera to hard drive to the best of my knowledge (I’m used to having the Audio and Video streams in separate folders, but these came attached to each other).

By checking the file with MediaInfo, it shows that there is one video stream and an 8-channel audio stream but when importing the file via the Media Browser or via the File menu, it only shows the audio tracks and nothing else.

    hmmm okay…
what codec is inside the mxf files? I suggest it is xdcam ex or xdcam hd or xd cam hd422.
ppro should accept all of these codecs.
so i guess that something is bad on your install of ppro cc. Also your footage could be damaged.
sorry, but for the moment i have no other answer.

I agree with Nils sounds like a folder structure issue. I have had a lot if issues with MXF files when only the “clips” folder has been copied from the original card. However if the root “contents” folder is which contains the “clips” folder and a couple of other crucial files is copied over then everything is OK in premiere and all clips are recognised.. However if VLC will open them then the info is there so possibly a conversion to a different file format will provide a solution.

I’ve encountered Media Browse issues where it would not point to consumer camcorder files via browse, but would through import, or browse where I manually pointed to one the files.
It was one of those pocket consumer camcorder cameras… and I had copied the entire directory structure of the card.

If you encounter this, try manually pointing to the one files via Browse, and then see if it has ‘learned’ the path the next time you need it from that type of media.
