  • Trouble getting rid of black solid background

I created a ring using a Video Copilot tutorial called “The Ring,” and it looks exactly as it’s supposed to, with a four color gradient background. The problem is, I just want to use the actual ring part, and get rid of the background. But when I make the background layer invisible, all it does it revert back to a black solid. I can’t figure out how to get rid of this black solid. Any ideas? Thank you!!!!

I think the “black solid” you are referring to is the default color of the transparent background. You can check this by clicking the “Show Transparency” button. It is a button under the viewer that looks like a checkerboard. When you click that button it should change the black color to the transparent checkerboard. The black color can also be changed to other colors and just serves as a way to better see what you are doing.

To export the ring with transparency put it in your render queue and choose “RGB + Alpha” in the settings. Once it has been exported with its alpha, you should be able to lay the ring over footage in your NLE.

…and remember, when outputting you will need to choose a codec that supports an alpha channel i.e. the QuickTime Animation codec. Many output options will indeed render the background that you have selected as a BG color, typically black.
