  • Trouble capturing P2 footage

Posted by James Wright on May 29, 2009 at 1:54 pm

    Hi,

im using Final cut pro 5.0.4 on a G5 powermac. Ive got the capture destinations set to the Mac hard drive and a External hard drive. The Mac has 50GB of space and the external 60GB.

For some reason when i try to capture a particular clip shot on a P2 i get the dreaded ‘capture scratch discs are full’.

The P2 folder itself with all the various audio & video etc says it is 4.89 GB.

So could anyone point me in the right direction of solving this.

    cheers

You have to Log and Transfer the footage. There is no “Capturing” of P2 footage.

I’m not even sure FCP 5.0.4 even supports the P2 workflow.

First thing, you do not capture P2 footage, you import it using FCP v5.

Second, never, never, store media on your system hard drive.

    James,

You will have import>p2 under your import options, if you have at least FCP 5.1.4

Also be sure your capture scratch is set to the ext HD, NOT the desktop or Mac HD.

I very strongly suggest that you get another hard drive for archiving p2 footage because you never know when you might have to go back to the raw footage to get something.

Archiving is easy, just drag and drop contents from p2 card into it’s own folder (e.g, “card 1 beach shoots”). NEVER forget to include the .txt file!

Also 60GB HD is too small for P2 cards archiving or storage.. you would only have room for a couple cards worth of footage. You should get at least a 250 or 500GB. Western Digital is ideal and the cost is reasonable.
