  • Trouble Capturing in Final Cut 5.1.4 DVX 100 Squeeze

Posted by Shelby Langley on July 20, 2007 at 12:05 am

I shot a film with a Panasonic DVX 100B in squeeze mode. I captured it in Final Cut at 48 kHz Anamorphic and Sequence Presets the same. The capture is fine except in the timeline the clips have no letterbox (they do have letterbox in the log/capture window). I am afraid I might have used the wrong settings for the squeeze mode. Also, was squeeze the best to shoot over letterbox? My DP made this decision but have heard some negative about squeeze.

I also tried to capture in 48 kHz 4:3 since it wasn’t shot with anamorphic lenses and I have the same problem of no letterbox once it gets in. Please help… I’m stuck.

Squeeze is not supposed to be letterbox- it’s 16:9. This may help you understand why this is:

    Thanks for the response Noah-
Are you saying I shouldn’t be getting letterbox in the Final Cut once I capture? It just confuses me because when I watch the footage in the camera it is letterboxed. Are my capture/sequence settings correct with DV NTSC 48 kHz Anamorphic (I shot DV) or should they be something else? Was squeeze a good choice over the letterbox?

    thanks

Did you look at that link? The letterbox you see in the camera is squeeze being letterboxed electronically so it looks right on the camera’s 4:3 display. In FCP this is not necessary because the viewer and canvass can be resized to native 16:9.

    Thanks Noah-
I did look at that link, it was helpful. I just had an editor tell me that I needed to capture in 4:3 since it was shot on DV so I got all turned around and confused. I understand what you’re saying as I shot on 16:9 (Squeeze) and Final Cut adapts to that so I will not see the black that the normal non-anormorphic monitor would generate. So again does this mean (just for reassurance) that my capture/sequence settings should be set to 48kHz (I shot on 48kHz) Anamorphic (3:2 Aspect Ratio; 16:9). Would that also include a few things I shot on a PD-150 in 16:9?

What is your opionion of squeeze mode? It’s not going to compromise my film?

    thanks, Shelby

    To simplify my questions….

I shot on 48kHz 24P Sqeeze. What should my capture/sequence settings be set to? Would this also apply to a PD 150 shot in 16:9? thanks, shelby

    DV-NTSC Anamorphic.

I have footage filmed with a DVX100B in squeeze mode, and I captured it in FCP 5 using the setting DV-NTSC. I did not capture it using an anamorphic setting. Do I need to capture it again? Or can something be done to fix it now?
    Thanks,
    John
