[Steve Bertone] “Took a 7MP picture every 2 secs for about 2 hours. Played each one back at .02 secs so I could render correctly and play back at 30 fps. I rendered in Sony avc, 1280x 720p 30 fps mp4 and it just doesn’t look as crisp as the pictures themselves. It is like is lost detail. I set the bit rate to 10mbps but that didn’t seem to make a difference. Any tip on how to preserve the quality of the photo in the time lapse? Do I need to raise the bit rate even more?”

Well… if you do the math, 1280 x 720 = 921,600 which is 0.9MP. So you resized a 7MP image down to less than 1MP and you want it to look the same? Seriously?

Your best option is to use a program like Photoshop to resize all of your images down to 1280×720. This way Vegas Pro doesn’t need to resize them. They will look as good as Photoshop can make a 7MP picture look at 0.9MP!

If you don’t have Photoshop, IrfanView (it’s free) has a very fast batch resize option.

Hahaha! : ) Let me rephrase. Remember I’m a newbie. I have seen some pretty darn clear 720p video. I would think that my photo wouldn’t go from looking like a clear crisp tree to fuzzy tree by resizing to 1280×720. But maybe I’m way off base.

Thanks everyone for sharing all of your resizing suggestions

It depends entirely on what you use to resize it. If you use a video program to resize an image you might get a fuzzy tree. If you use an image editing program to resize an image you might get a clear crisp smaller tree. It all depends. It’s a case of using the right tool for the job.

Newbies often make the mistake of thinking that the Pros do everything in one program. We do not. We have a production pipeline of programs that we use to make sure that the optimal tool gets used for every task. Preparing images for video in Photoshop is an extremely common workflow. Vegas Pro does an excellent job of resizing images but for those times when you need more… use a better tool for the job. I’m just trying to tell you how the people who get clear crisp 720p video do it. 😉
