Troble capturing from HVR Z1U
I have 1 hour long film from some dance performance and FCP is trying to find time code break between clips for very long time. I am capturing directly from camera (HDV_DV downconvert, squeeze mode) and settings for capture are standard : Fire wire NTSC and Capture input is DV NTSC 48. Is there any mode to avoid this long wait for time code? Film is done by free run for time code in purpose to synchronize two camera’s.

Well.. It’s not worth the pain and suffering that time of day code gives post I think… So just capture it using “non controllable device” as the device control setting. Timecode wom’t match what’s on the tape, but you’ll get the footage in, and you’ll get it all…
The other way around the problem is to dub the tape creating a new timecode track that is continuous.

If you don’t have too many camera starts and stops you could mark in five seconds after each TC break and batch capture. That is if you can afford to loose the material. Otherwise Jerry’s suggestion to dub the tape with new timcode would be a good option. The downside is that the TC on your two tapes won’t match. You can always force the one of the captured tape’s TC to match using the Modify Time Code function in FCP. It might be tricky to find a visual or aural reference to sync the two tapes. Also if you loose your media you won’t be able to recapture the media with modified TC it won’t reference the original tape.

Gee thanks Jerry. So when he turns up in online and wants it recaptured HD its a total pain. Sorry but if you shoot time of day code, then you wait for FCP to capture the code breaks. I can assure you it is much quicker to do it this way than sit eye matching later in an online.
If you never need to reconform for any reason then go ahead and ignore the timecode.

That said, I’m so used to short take material… I never think about if you have 5-30 minute takes…

Yes, that’s why the suggestion to dub the tapes Micheal. Capture the dubs… I suppose I should have spelled that out. It solves your “objections” to my first suggestion.
