We have been using Nvidia 128 Meg Dual Head display cards on all of our P. Pro workstations for a while now. Are planning upgrades to these stations with new MBoards, etc. Would like to be able to monitor to (3)DVI LCD’s or (2)DVI LCD’s and (1)Realtime Composite/YC/Component. HDV is also an issue. Anyone have any suggestions on what to look at. Will going to 256 Meg help in anypart of the NLE workflow, particularily for GPU related FX both in P.Pro and other Apps. Parhelia APV, Matrox, Nvidia ???

You might actually consider two cards. The NVidea Quadro FX 540 can do two monitors, or one monitor plus the component (HDV) or S-Video or composite – and then the other card can deal with the first two monitors. A regular, inexpensive PCI-Express card for the second card, and the Quadro goes into the PCI-Express16 slot.

Steve, you used to favour the Matrox triple head, does that not work well?

John, at this point of time there is little value in 128/256 upgrade for video work. That will change in the next 6/12 months.
Have you thought of keeping your current cards and adding a firewire to component/yc/analog external box/card for high quality realtime video monitoring. They’re not very expensive, handle HDV and far less complicated than a triple head.

  • Thanks, guys, for the advice. Will report back as to what we finally decide upon and how well it integrates into our workflow.

What changed was that I actually saw the the Quadro FX 540 in action.

The HDV Connect from Convergent Design is just about here. That would give you an excellent array of choices for I/O in addition to a dual-head display card. (or you could go triple head-desktop).

I also agree that the 540 is a decent solution as well, particularly where HD is involved.
