  • Trimming Media in Media Manager

    Hi everyone!
I usually log my footage but yesterday, just to speed up my work, I decided to capture withouth logging before, then I used DV start/stop detection to create subclips and renamed them… Now I would like to make a copy or use the existing media to create different files from each subclip… I followed the step by step tutorial in the FCP user manual (FCP version 5.0.4)…
    – I deleted the original master clip from wich I created subclips
    – I selected the subclips I want to manage
    – I used media manager with these settings
“use existing”, “delete unused media etc…” (no handles), “use clip names”, deselected “duplicate selected items and place into a new project”…

The result was that FCP create a single (trimmed) file using the name of the first subclip I selected…
    What’s the problem?
Sometimes I’m one of them who dreams to come back to Avid when using FCP MM… 🙁

rather than “use existing” you need to choose “copy media”. You need to have enough hd space to fit the copied media but the bar graphs at the top of the media manager window should indicate how much you’ll need as well as how much you’re losing from the original file.
Once the Media Manager has done its stuff you then have to go (in the finder) to the folder that your original media clips were in and delete them. The Media Manager doesn’t delete the original media, it just creates new media referenced by your subclips. This enables you to consolidate down on to a single drive (or even a cd-rom for small jobs) while keeping the entire media on the original drive/raid. It also means you can check the new media before you delete the originals, I’ve only had the media manager garble the data once but I was very relieved not to have to redig.

Thank you! I thought using “copy” was not the right way to make the job but it is very useful (first time I tried I had to recapture an entire reel). I have about 300Gb free on my RAID and my source material is about 6 hours DV…
I tried different times using “copy” but the result was the same. FCP produced a single file named as the first subclip I selected. Then I found out that since I use DV start/stop detection most my sublcips begin a frame after the end of the previous subclip (eg. subclipA OUT 12:00:12 subclipB IN 12:00:13). In this case FCP Media Manager do not divides the source media file. If I set the IN point of subclipB 2 frames after subclipA OUT (eg. subclipA OUT 12:00:13, subclipB IN 12:00:15) Final Cut divides the source media files into two single files… Ok here’s a solution but don’t you think FCP Media Manager has too many bugs for a version 5?

Well, yesterday, at night, I went to a friend of mine that still uses Avid… I tried to manage some sublclips with contigous IN/OUT point and… Suprise! In that situation, Avid too produces a single media file!!
This morning FCP export cue solved my problem!
    thanks
