Apologies: It’s a Sony EX-1 video camera. I was confused in the trim settings – not mentioned in manual. Record level at 0db was way too low. the rental house set up setting was -41db, which i wasn’t familiar with and received what I see now is wrong information from a person there, who suggested I set it at 0db. when i switched back to -41db, the level is fine.

i want to be sure i’m not recording compromised audio quality.

OK, so I’m guessing that the 0dB setting was when the camera was fed a line level to its inputs and -41 for mic level.

That would suggest that if you were feeding the camera with a line level from a mixer, that the 0 dB level should be used.

BTW, I was working with an EX-1 on friday and was dismayed to find another supposedly professional camera with no -20 indicators (or any others) for setting calibration. I think there ought to be a law.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Speaking of laws: how does a Canon C-300 get let out of the factory. A video camera that can’t be taken off the tripod without building a heinous Rube Goldberg contraption to sort of shoot with it handheld. I have to go lie down.
