  • TRIM ODDITY IN FCP 6

    Hi Cow-ers:

Posted this before, but got no responses — so here goes again…

I’m cutting a feature shot on P2 (DVCPRO HD 720p24), both on my desktop Dual G5 and my PowerBook 1.67. I’m cutting with merged clips (double-system sound synched to picture) and most times (but not all) when I enter the trim window, the incoming/outgoing shots display correctly at first, but if I trim either of them, they both jump visually to something much later/earlier than the trim calls for.

For example: a 1 frame trim, and the trim number could jump 9:16 later…and the like. It almost seems as if it jumps to the end/beginning of the full clip, but I haven’t double-checked that…

When I preview the edit, it displays it correctly, trimming only the one frame.

What is going on? Is this a known FCP 6 bug, or something I’m not doing correctly? Does it relate to the merged clips somehow?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Needless to say, I’m using the trim function a lot.

    Best, JIM.

The first thing I’d do might be to trash the prefs. Whenever FCP starts behaving as though its possessed, its usually that the preferences have become corrupted. It may not be the source of your problems, but it might be.

    Hi David:

Thanks for your reply. Well, trashing the prefs worked for about 5 seconds — and it was sure nice — now back to usual oddities. I’m starting to get the feeling it has something to do with the merged clips thing…confusing poor old FCP. I wonder if something like ‘Make Independent Clip’ or ‘Duplicate as New Master Clip’ could be helpful here?

    Anyone with advice, welcome.

    Best, JIM.
