Tricking Ae into importing different Ai files?
Hello!
So, I have an extremely complicated character rig set up in AE. I want to make other characters with the EXACT same character rig, but I don’t want to redo it in AE. My character is currently linked to an Illustrator file, which is always nice because I can edit the character in Ai and it will update in Ae. If I could somehow trick AE into importing another file for my new characters, then I wouldn’t have to redo the character rig, I could just standardize names of my layers in Ai, and then it would import them the same way. The hard part is achieving this while maintaining my original Ai file(s). :/ Any help is appreciated, and happy new year AE users!

Have you tried “File replace” in AE? just keep different copies of your Illustrator character and point AE to the file you want to use in your duplicated comp.

Hey David!
Thank you! I just gave this a try, and it works on Ai layers, but unfortunately not entire Ai comps or layer folders. This still does save a ton of time! (for future users, the command in the project window is command+h)

I thought you only had one illustrator file containing multiple layers… if you have multiple Illustrator files, you may want to put them in a distinctive folder for each character rig, but keeping always the same Illustrator file names… in AE you just have to indicate which character folder to use for each comp… there might be also a clever way to do it with AE scripts/expressions… have you looked into aescripts.com?
