  • Traveling Matte for object with outline

I created my graphic elements in illustrator, exported them as
photoshop files and imported them into AE to create the animation. I
am using Alpha traveling Mattes to designate the area where I want
certain objects to appear in the animation and have realized that the
solid I am using for the traveling Matte has to be the same color as
the object in order for the object to be seen through the matte. The
problem is that I had black outlines around the objects and I am
unable to see these black outlines through the Matte. So my question
is, how can I use the traveling Matte while also being able to see the
black outline. I hope this makes sense. Please let me know if you do
    not understand.

Here’s a link to the animation, I need to add black outlines/edge to
    the arrows. https://www.tvivideo.com/orioncookeranim.htm

    All help is greatly appreciated!

Hmm, how far back do I go?

First why save an ai file as psd?

Second both have alpha so why any traveling mattes?

The matte can be any color.

If you want a outline put it in the ai file and it will be there in AE.

A totally different way to do it would be…

On a new layer make a mask the correct oval shape as one side of the convection.
Add text (arrows) to the layer and have it follow the mask.
    animate as you see fit.
    Duplicate and flip (-X scale).

    [TonyTony]
First why save an ai file as psd?”

Because AIs will cause noticeable slowdown both while working and on render. Unless you intend to do the space zoom routine (which in this instance sems to not be the case), there’s no point in burdening your system.

Odd, I have never noticed a slow down. I guess since in this case there is no scaling then turning off continuously rasterize would elevate any “extra” burned on the computer.

Anyways still doesn’t answer all the other “whys”.
