Right, so I have a graphic of a background with an alpha. Through the alpha a live video image must be shown (picture in picture). When I import the graphic and set the image to composite-travel matte alpha, the key is fine but my background (from the graphic) disappears. It seems as fcp just uses the key from the graphic and not the graphic itself. The solution is to reimport the graphic and set the alpha to none–ignore, and use that graphic as background. But there must be another way to do this….right? Imorting the file two times (one with alpha and one without the alpha) is not very elegant.

    Thanks,

That’s the way it works. If the alpha that’s needed for the matte is in the background image you need to apply it twice. The image can’t be used both as a travel matte and a background image simultaneously. If you’re really bothered by the extra layer you could set the alpha channel to the background image in the timeline to none. Apply Image Mask to the video and then then use the background from the browser in the Image Mask well set to alpha. This will only work with a still image.
