Trashy Artifacts with Puppet Tool ?
Posted by Justin Vi on March 14, 2011 at 11:20 amHello,
After animating with the Puppet Tool I get the strange “trashy” artifacts around the edges of animated layer which looks something like this:
Don’t know how to solve this problem. Could someone help me with this issue?
Thank you,
Justin

March 16, 2011 at 12:29 amSelect the puppet pin effect, enable the puppet pin tool and turn on the mesh. The mesh needs to encompass the whole picture or strange things will happen on the edges. You can expand the size of the mesh by adjusting the ‘expansion’ parameter right next to the ‘show mesh’ tick button. You want it as small as possible yet covering the whole image.
You can also increase the number of triangles in your mesh to reduce artifacting. Bear in mind this will significantly increase rendering times.

No problem. I’ve been working with the puppet tool alot the past few months, so I’m getting to learn it’s habits, good and bad!

December 6, 2013 at 12:43 pmA very big thanks for sharing this tip, John Bagge! I found this thread after experiencing the same problem with photoshop.
I had previously just thought these trashy artifacts / edge problems were just a side-effect of using the puppet tool.
Hope this thread is found easily by others with the same issue.
