A precomp is usually the way to go, but there are a few more options (which may or may not working according to your circumstances):

– Duplicate text layers, connecting source text by expression
– Set Matte effect
– Preserve transparency layer switch

Not sure if i understand the usage but you might try the silhouette alpha blend mode.
