  • Transparent Bottle Rendering

    Hi guys,

I’m having a few issues with rendering a transparent bottle and I’m hoping you can help me out.
Here’s the effect I’m going for: (transparent bottle placed onto a dark background)

This was rendered in 3DS Max using Vray, however I’m using Cinema 4D and their standard render engine.
The bottle needs to be composited onto the background in post as the colour & brightness of it may need changing.
I figure the way to do this is to render the bottle with an object buffer, however when I do that, I don’t get the transparency I’d like:

I’m sure that the lighting setup and background within the scene are crucial to getting this looking the way I want it, but I don’t work with transparency all that often and so I can’t seem to figure this out. At the moment, I have an off-white background with some lights & a single soft-box (using a dark background subsequently darkens the entire bottle).  The bottle has to retain that bright, reflective and realistic look whilst still being able to switch out the dark background in After Effects. The stupid thing is, I’m sure I’ve managed something like this in the past, but I’ve been trying to rack my brain around it for the past hour or 2 and I’m getting nowhere.
    Here are my material settings:

If you have any advice on how to approach this, it would be massively appreciated.
    Thanks very much!

perhaps for what you want (I think) you could be using the Refraction, Reflection and Specular passes to composite with

I had better results through simply rendering a .PNG with an alpha and not using an object buffer, however with no background and having the bottle just floating in black empty space, I can’t seem to get very nice lighting or reflections. The bottle just ends up looking dark and grotty instead of bright, clear and realistic.

    Thanks for responding.
