I’m experienced with Illustrator but am having an awful lot of trouble trying to achieve this effect. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I would usually start by creating a shape with a light blue radial gradient, light blue from 100% to 0% opacity. I then go to effect>texture>grain to get the grain that I want, but it is filled with white which I don’t want. Usually I would set this to multiply to remove the white, but since this image is lighter than my background, this doesn’t work.

Is this possible to achieve in illustrator?

I might try just creating the texture in Photoshop, then placing the the texture in the AI file, and using your shape as a clipping mask.
Maybe, you’ll have 2 layers – the gradient underneath, and the texture set to multiply on top.
Put the Ai file and source texture in its own project folder.

    in PS, maybe…
On a black layer, Filter Noise, then scale to 400%, then maybe Gaussian blur.
    Or
On a black layer, Filter Reticulation, then scale to 200%, then maybe Unsharp mask.

Yes, using PS seems like it will be a lot less hassle. Thanks Vincent!
