transparency question
Simple question I’m sure…I’m cutting photos into layers in photoshop, sending into ImageReady to export all layers as files. Format is GIF with transparency and trying to bring into AE to do some 3D effects. Once in AE the transparent parts are now white, so I’m missing a setting somewhere for recognizing alpha? I can color key out the white, but this seems a really bad way to go with dozens of photos in the project. Am I just missing a check box somewhere?

I never really use GIF’s in AE so I did what you did in Image Ready and get the same problem in AE. It seems like it shouldn’t be a problem, but it is. I think the best solution for you is to take the layered file back into to Photoshop, then Save As a psd file, then import that into AE as a Composition (will have all layers in a composition) or as footage (and you choose a layer).

Thanks. That seems so obvious now, of course. I edit in Vegas so wasn’t in the mindset to use the PSD file since I’m used to splitting out the layers. Thanks for the fast reply!

NEVER use GIF for transparency. It doesn’t have an alpha channel, only a single transparent color, and that’s bad bad bad for aliasing and anything else thas to do with transparency. Always use PSD as suggested above or PNG which is a great format for any situation where you can’t use the original Photoshop layers. Make sure the PNG is set to “millions of colors+” or 32-bit or whatever the app you use calls it and you’ll be good to go.
