    Hey-

I just sent a friend of mine and avi file encoded with the xvid codec and millions+ of colors (this does include alpha channel, right?). Now my friend is trying to import the video into AE so he can lay it over some video. The trouble is AE seems to be ignoring the alpha channel. Can this be fixed?

We’ve also tried using Premiere, but the program just shows black for a short time and then crashes.

    Thanks in advance

Well, I have never used that codec, but assuming that your friend has the codec installed also, it should work. What you need to check is import the file into AE. Then right click on it in the Project Window. Choose Interpret Footage > Main from the Menu. Then under Alpha, select whatever alpha you rendered. (most likely Straight) or click on guess. Then hit OK. That should hopefully help you out.

Here’s what I found on the web…sounds like XVID isn’t gonna support your alpha channel…

Okay, do you know of any good codecs that do support it?

Best codecs that I have run into/use are the animation codec (quicktime) or the “none” codec (quicktime)…

the core problem with these codecs is that they are HUGE….many megs per second….. I still haven’t found a codec that has an alpha that doesn’t butcher the footage AND has a small file size…

I personally use the animation codec all the time when I need to share 32bit files with folks outside of my facilty..

If you are just swapping movies for use in after effects (not final viewing) you could try the PNG quicktime codec. It has much smaller file sizes than animation codec and retains the use of the alpha channel…

    Lagarith: https://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html

Lossless avi codec that gets very good compression ratios.
