  • Transitions to text affecting video, why and how do I stop it?

Posted by Robert Bracken on December 7, 2011 at 7:43 pm

My text is a purple bar and when I try to add a transition it is affecting the video. Why is that? How do I make it stop?

    Thank you,
    -Bobby

This is one thing that’s pretty lame with X. I did some experimenting and found that certain transitions work without effecting the layer under them but it needs a work-around. The way I did it was transition from an empty text clip to one with text. From what I can tell, not all transitions work but the blurs do.

The reason I asked again is because my clip this time WAS a compound clip. The update makes it easier to add transitions to tracks above the magnetic timeline.

I’m still in the FCP 7 way of editing I guess.

[Robert Bracken] “The reason I asked again is because my clip this time WAS a compound clip. The update makes it easier to add transitions to tracks above the magnetic timeline.”

The update automatically adds a secondary storyline, not a compound clip, to connected clips.

so in your case, you’d add a transition to the text clip (which will put it in a secondary storyline) then you compound that clip so that transition and the text clip are now inside the compound. That will then keep the dissolve effect inside the compound and not effect the video below. Do not add the transition to the outside of the compound or you will be back to where you started.

    What effect are you using?

Jeremy – thanks for clearing this up. I was trying different combinations of storyline vs. compound clip and it never worked right. I followed your steps exactly and it works. This cleared up the issues I was having with idustrial Volumetrix as well. You CAN teach an old dog new tricks!

Or maybe not… the Volumetrix transition plays back fine when un-rendered but after render the incoming transition blows the text up to full screen for the transition and then it cuts back to regular size. The outgoing transition is fine for some reason. Will keep trying…

I adding the slide transition to a blur text.

It is still messing up for me even when I put the transition onto the text then make the whole thing into a compound clip.

I just tried this (sorry for the delay) and it seems to be working fine. The text slides in from the left and doesn’t effect the video underneath. No compound clip is even necessary

Nick, as far a Volumetrix, I’m not sure about that one as I don’t have it.
