Transitions Not Working
I have a clip, found the perfect spot for a transition, used the blade took to cut into two clips, added a cross dissolve and nothing happens!!!! In fact, no transition works… Am I going crazy??? Of course I’m on deadline!!! If you don’t have an answer, does anybody have any painless ways of committing suicide?

I’m going to assume you’re using Premiere Pro CS4?
I found this problem and a workaround when I first got Premiere Pro CS4, back in December last year.
Lately, though, I haven’t had the problem, so I suspect that if you download updates for Premiere, it should be OK.
In the meantime, the workaround I found was this:
The transitions work fine until you render the sequence, at which stage the Cross-Dissolve disappears entirely, and becomes a plain cut.
The workaround is place a single keyframe of 99% Opacity on your clip – and Presto! – the transition is back in all its glory.
I hope this saves your sanity!

You are quite right when using a clean cut and adding a cross dissolve or any other transition, it is not going to work.
Transitions need handles.
So after using the razor, trim 15 frames of the right side of the left clip. Trim of 15 frames of the left side of the right clip.
Now add the transition.The issue mentioned by Colin is fixed in CS4 4.1

Reading your response here and was amazed that it deals with a very similar problem I just witnessed. I use Premiere 6.5 (about once a year) and am currently working on a project of all stills. The transitions worked fine (and still do) up to about half way through and now will not render, and act as quick cuts. Have I clicked on something that caused this accidently?

i encountered the same problem, but removing 15 frames didn’t work.
any other suggestions?
